I knew in the first few pages that I would like this book. A heroine that is not a standard beauty but a bearded dwarf and the humor made me smile in anticipation. Then there is a con artist elf, named Aelf and a wererabbit, called Bunny. There is plenty of action and a good story that definitely satisfied my anticipation. Thumbs up on this one.Product details

Rune Service An Urban Fantasy Novel Dwarf for Hire Book 1 edition by J B Garner Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I had a difficult time deciding how to rate this book. I received an ARC of the book from another author whose books I enjoy, so I was inclined to like this book just on that recommendation. On the one hand, it is refreshing to find urban fantasy that mostly sticks to fantasy, rather than the recent influx of paranormal and romance based UF. I enjoyed the characters, especially our heroine Mary Stone, and the plot was intricate enough to be compelling without being so complicated you needed a notebook to keep up.
But I just couldn't get absorbed in the story. I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I think the author's good vocabulary and grammar may have been his downfall. Everything felt very formal and too smooth. Dialogue and narrative bled together a bit for me, and most of the characters didn't seem to have a very unique voice in terms of word usage, even if their personalities were extremely different. For example, I had a very hard time feeling the urgency of an escape scene because the sentences tended to be long and descriptive rather than short and pointed. This may be a very picky thing, but it definitely kept this from being a 5-star book for me. But that's just a preference, and this author doesn't write in the style I tend to prefer.
So why 4 stars instead of lower? Well, the plot is what kept me coming back to this book even when I would put it down for a breather. The characters themselves are quirky and while they each had a bit of a twist, there was enough of the classic fantasy tropes to keep my Tolkien-loving heart happy. And the world building gave me a place I was interested in seeing again. I would definitely consider reading the next installment in this series, but I have to admit it wouldn't be on the top of my TBR pile.
Anyone who has ever worked the evening or overnight shift at a convenience store is used to the regulars as well as the not so occasional odd happening. For some of us, that is a welcoming atmosphere. Mary Stone is one of those used to the night shift odd events. Even she isn't quite up for the stunning stranger that shows up in her store right before the storefront is obliterated by a blast from a magical weapon. Taking cover in the secure room, she discovers that Aelfie is an Elven prince that insists she is a dwarf & the only one that can help him. Dodging more blasts of the magical weapon they escape through a tunnel to her apartment where Aelfie is injured by their attackers and captured by a bounty hunter werebunny. Mary discovers that Aelfie is being hunted for double crossing a drake over a magical stone. She makes a deal with the drake and discovers that she does indeed have magical powers. This is just the beginning of Mary's adventures. Along the way she discovers more magical creatures, love, and learns more about this strange world that has discovered her. I read an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed this book a lot! Nice take on some a different type of "mythological" being.
Can I get my money back? Not my cup of tea...
Dwarf raised human finds ancestral skills including rune magic and an elvin prince suitor in this urban paranormal rolicking tale. Good proofreading
In book one you mentioned the hell hole of Detroit. If you had mentioned the "train station" it would have been perfect for conducting figment business. I would actually believe it, knowing it's nefarious history.
This is a very entertaining book. Pure pleasurable reading front to back. Can not we for the next book period.
It was so nice reading a book where the protagonist wasn't some long lost elven princess for once!
Dwarves are waaaay underrepresented in urban fantasy and this one was great!
